When Verena Schiml embarked on a move with her husband to Amsterdam from Germany she had no idea what she was in for. She became a mother which led her to reflect on what kind of career and life she wanted for herself. She decided to leave behind a 10 year career in marketing and follow her passion for fitness and sports. She became a certified personal trainer and started working for Mom in Balance, a fitness program with a mission to support as many moms (to-be) as possible in building a strong, energetic life foundation. Verena was thrilled to be helping other moms build a healthy lifestyle and reach their personal fitness goals. Now, living in NYC this Beyond Mom is enjoying bringing this popular European concept to New Yorkers.
What makes you a Beyond Mom?
I’m a Beyond Mom because I’m never standing still. Whether it is a job or the country I live in.
I became a mom when my husband and I decided to move abroad almost 7 years ago from Germany (where we both come from) to the Netherlands. Motherhood and living abroad away from family, friends and my old job in marketing, made me think deeply about what kind of career and job I wanted to have. I had worked in Marketing and Account Management for over 10 years.
My path quickly became clear as I followed my passion for sports (I was a competitive swimmer all my youth) and became a personal fitness trainer. The major switch in my profession was the best thing I ever did. I love my job and the fact that I get to help others (moms and moms to be) to live a healthier and more active life!
What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a Mom?
I am much more patient (or at least try to be) since I have had kids. My range of emotions is much wider than before kids. I am also confronted with my weaknesses, which I try to use as a way to learn and grow. Combining a career and having kids gives me the feeling of a deep satisfaction and balance in my life. When I help moms and expecting moms obtain their healthy lifestyle goals during this intense time of their lives, it drives me and keeps me motived as a businesswoman. I also see it helping me become a better parent.
Can you share a collaboration/success story with another woman; what helped the collaboration become successful?
When I started to work for Mom in Balance in 2011, our Founder Esther van Diepen impressed me with her power, ambition and positive attitude. Working together with and for her inspired me in many ways and I am really grateful I met her. Since starting up my Mom in Balance Franchise Business here in New York, we are still in close contact, which is very valuable for me.
What relationships help you stay connected to yourself?
My husband and my best friend (who lives in Germany) help me stay connected with myself. And also “me-time” to reflect and listen to my feelings and recharge.
Do you have a ‘Beyond’ dream that you are pursuing?
As a European and entrepreneur I am bringing a European concept to the US and specifically to NYC (when you can make it here you can make it anywhere!). I have the ambition to make Mom in Balance a huge success here in NYC. I learned so much already since moving to the US last summer.
The other dream I have for our family is to travel for several months, sort of like a sabbatical.
What wellness activity can you not live without? What is one thing you do daily that balances you?
Running (almost daily) to relax, destress and reconnect with myself, but also sports (yoga, crossfit, swimming) in general, makes my mind free and helps me to recharge. And my daily fresh smoothie kicks my day off!
How does style influence the way you stay feeling ‘Beyond’? Who is currently your favorite designer?
I would describe my style as “sporty feminine”. I got inspired by the Dutch moms who know how to look casual and sporty but still stylish. I love the Dutch brand “Maison Scotch” and the Designer Filippa K and DAY Birger & Mikkelsen.
Favorite Spots that Embody The Beyond Mom:
Going out for dinner is one of my favorite things to do with my husband! Since I am quite new in NYC, I have to explore so many more restaurants. So far, my favorites are Bar Bolonat in West Village (love the Israeli cuisine) and the Colonie restaurant in Brooklyn. Our family favorite is the organic restaurant Bare Burger on 7th Avenue in Park Slope.
Beyond Cocktails and/or Food:
I don’t drink alcohol very often, but when I do, I like Parish Bar in Park Slope.
I love running, swimming, crossfit and bootcamp. I try to bring as much variation to my workout routine as possible. And of course, teaching my outdoor classes for Mom in Balance.
To be honest, I barely go shopping, but I do a lot online. For food I fell in love for Whole Foods and I am also a member of the Park Slope Food Coop, a great concept, where you can work for the community and get fresh, local and organic products back for a decent price.
