For the past few years Beyond Mom has been featuring inspiring women every Monday. It’s finally time to shine a light on the founder herself, Randi Zinn. As the founder she encourages moms to cultivate a life “Beyond Mom”- one that embraces the gifts of motherhood but expresses all that they are as individuals: creators, businesswomen, thinkers, friends, and more. Now Randi is sharing her wisdom, expert insights and stories through her brand new book Going Beyond Mom: How to Activate Your Mind, Body, and Business After Baby. In this book Randi provides the guidance and the tools women need to find their strength, body and mind, thus laying the integral foundations to bring entrepreneurial ideas to fruition. You can order the book right here! And get to the know the woman behind the movement below!
What makes you a Beyond Mom?
After coining the phrase Beyond Mom and watching how the hundreds of women we have interviewed have answered this question with so much heart and soul, I find myself digging deep to answer this in a way that encompasses all the magic of motherhood and the journey. What make ME a Beyond Mom is that I’m doing this whole dynamic with mindfulness. You see, I don’t want life to pass me by in a blur. I want to see every moment for what it is, even if its a tough one. I want to respond authentically, according to my true nature. I want to meet my kids where they are. AND I want to be ME. I consider myself a Beyond Mom because I want to be ME. I feel that’s worthy of repeating.
What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a Mom?
My confidence has expanded ten fold. Before kids, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, who I was meant to be, what I was capable of. Something happened when my first child was born- I became curious about people in a whole new way, and I wanted to do something that mattered and made an impact. And not for nothing my son is a tough cookie who has taught me (and continues to teach me) to own my voice and stand my ground! Since becoming a mom the second time around, I feel like my skills have heightened having to do the juggle a little tighter, choose what I commit to a little more wisely, and now, raise a little girl in this world. With motherhood, I feel myself evolving and growing and I’m loving that feeling.
Can you share a collaboration/success story with another woman; what helped the collaboration become successful?
Shout out to Aileen Haugh- my amazing brand curator and right hand woman! The past few years has been a fantastic journey building Beyond Mom and I really can’t imagine doing it without Aileen. Many of you know her through email communications, welcomes and hugs at our events, and the way she has taken the mission of Beyond Mom and embraced it as her own. But let me tell you a few more things that make our collaboration so much fun: she loves my kids, she loves to eat, she’s super creative (and a very talented actress), and completely understands when I have had an anxious moment and needed to cry. We all need to work closely with someone like this, especially when we’re pushing the envelope and doing something innovative.
What relationships help you stay connected to yourself?
My friends! My friends! My friends! My friends are my air. I need to laugh, break down, tell stories, hear their stories, escape to another place, another way of thinking, and my friends help me do this! You know that feeling when you’re sitting across the table from your friend and you look at them and you think, wow, this is an amazing woman. I’m really really lucky to be right here, right now, across from this beautiful person….and your heart feels full. That is my favorite feeling in the world and it literally fuels me.
Do you have a ‘Beyond’ dream that you are pursuing?
The launch of my book Going Beyond Mom: How to Activate Your Mind, Body, and Business After Baby is definitely part of my personal “Beyond” dream. Since I was young I knew writing books would be part of my offering to the world. I wrote fiction and memoir for years, but who knew that motherhood and what I’ve learned through building the Beyond Mom community would inspire my first published work! I’m so unbelievably excited to launch this book, to host events, do interviews, meet people, and most importantly, to see how this book has a positive effect on the people that read it.
Part one of the book guides you on how to befriend the “new you” creating a foundation that is strong and positive. Part two provides the tools to launch an idea that “new you” might have. The book weaves in the insights and stories of the women who have guided me on my journey- truly brilliant women who are changing the world in their fields. I really believe that this book can change the dialogue around motherhood in our culture- that there is a way to navigate its challenges with mindfulness and positive action, resulting in productivity, close-knit community, and happiness.
What wellness activity can you not live without? What is one thing you do daily that balances you?
Since the birth of my second child, I’ve become a huge fan of pilates reformer. I need strength and stabilization for my body but also for my mind. Weaving yoga, barre, and dance through my week makes me feel strong, inspired, and open. How you move your body should give your mind what it needs. I believe in choosing wellness activities that feed all your needs, physically and emotionally. I also love walking New York City- keeps me moving and I just love to absorb the magnetic energy of productivity in my great city!
How does style influence the way you stay feeling ‘Beyond’? Who is currently your favorite designer?
I love to dress in a way that is comfortable and stylish, in looks that take me through the entire day and perhaps into an evening event. I love Rebecca Taylor because her designs are simultaneously feminine and modern. For fitness, I think we all know by now that I love Athleta! I blend their fitness and lifestyle lines so I’m always ready to move but look cute and put together to navigate my day. Athleta is a brand designed for busy, productive, active women so it really works for me.
