Lisa Ridd is the founder of Smitten Films and a TriBeCa-based mother of 3. Before founding Smitten Films, Lisa worked in Equity Sales at Lehman Brothers and in film production in London. The initial inspiration for Smitten Films came when Lisa’s first son, Jude, was born. While at home with Jude, Lisa used nap times and production skills to begin editing together footage into beautiful family films that friends and family were smitten with. Those early films eventually turned into a company that makes custom family films for busy parents with beautiful memories they want to savor – Smitten Films. This Beyond Mom shares her favorite go-to spots plus the challenges of balancing time as a mom.
What makes you a Beyond Mom?
I am so many things: wife, daughter, sister, friend, entrepreneur, seeker, adventurer, thinker, supporter. While I am all of these things, nothing brings me more pride and joy than being a mom.
What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a Mom?
I’ve expanded from the inside out – my heart has expanded, my understanding of the universe has expanded, my empathy has expanded. Ironically, I sometimes get frustrated that being a parent makes your world smaller. I care so deeply about the things that effect my little party of 5 that I have little time for people, places, and things that do not fit into the bubble. Sometimes that makes me feel selfish. Other times, it makes me feel like I am putting my head down and doing the most important work there is – raising good kids – which will have a greater impact on society in the long run. But it’s hard to not feel guilty sometimes about not having the time to give to those outside my immediate family as much as I did previously.
Can you share a collaboration/success story with another woman; what helped the collaboration become successful?
Smitten Films was built for moms and employs all moms. We partner and work with female-led brands regularly. These collaborations go well because we are all on the same page as women (and most of us as moms). The closest working relationship that I have right now is with Smitten’s Marketing Director, a brilliant fellow mom who is always the smartest person in the room and also a great sounding board. Without her, I would be lost (this is my public plea to her to never leave me!).
What relationships help you stay connected to yourself?
My husband keeps me grounded, whether I like it or not. It’s easy to get caught up in the NYC hysteria but he has two things going for him – 1) He’s British and could really care less about what the ‘done’ thing is in NYC and 2) He’s the most independent thinker I know and has never sought outside approval. He reminds me who I am and what is important to me regularly. Apart from my husband, my mom has passed down the most beautiful legacy of “family first” and my entire family – subscribes to that mantra every day.
Do you have a ‘Beyond’ dream that you are pursuing?
I am living it now! Running and growing my company is literally a dream come true.
What wellness activity can you not live without? What is one thing you do daily that balances you?
I cannot live without yoga; it is the one thing that consistently grounds and re-sets me. My daily balance comes from the first thing I do when my kids wake up in the morning: we hug, kiss, and say good morning to each other. We have this sweet, intimate moment together before the chaos of the day starts. It’s SO simple but so intentional and sets the strong foundation for the day.
How does style influence the way you stay feeling ‘Beyond’? Who is currently your favorite designer?
I’m super into LoveShackFancy right now – it helps me feel sexy and feminine in a way that has nothing to do with being a mom. For everyday wear, I absolutely love Valley in the neighborhood for it’s playful and edgy selection of basics.
Favorite Local Spots that Embody The Beyond Mom:
Fourteenjay – I have been getting my hair done here since they opened a few years ago. They know how to make you feel pampered in a low key way.
Onda Beauty – This is where I shop for the beauty products that resonate with my lifestyle – clean, natural products, very carefully curated for the busy and discerning shopper.
Vin Sur Vingt – Their new Tribeca outpost is my go-to for catching up with a fellow mom over a perfectly curated wine list.
WeWork Tribeca – Our Tribeca office is truly a favorite local spot that helps me feel like I am 100% beyond mom, not just Jude or Poppy or Hudson’s mom!
Beyond Cocktails and/or Food:
Anything spicy with tequila or mezcal. The Bennet has the perfect cocktail called Xantolo for me! As for food, these are my local go to’s: Racines, Little Park, Khe-Yo, Locanda Verde, Frenchette, Yves, Greca.
Yoga Vida, Tribeca
The Class, Tribeca
I really do love shopping for my kids, so it’s hard to go beyond in this category! But here are some local shops I love:
