Becky Fawcett is the founder and president of Helpusadopt.org, an equality based organization that seeks to reduce the financial burden of adoption by awarding large, life-changing, problem-solving grants. As a mother of two adopted children, Becky and her husband Kipp were so grateful that they had the financial means to adopt that they decided to make a donation to an organization that would help ease another family’s financial burden. Sadly, they could not find an adoption grant organization that was based on a mission of equality. To address this need and help all types of families, they founded Helpusadopt.org in 2007. Her groundbreaking work has also been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Steve Harvey Show and People.com.
“I spent years trying to be perfect. Now I just own it. I love marching to my own drum. I wear what I want to wear, I say what I want to say, I rock the boat and I let my kids have Doritos for breakfast if they want to—they’ll live. Some call me weird and others might call me worse—I’m ok with that.”- Heather
What makes you a Beyond Mom?
The minute I realized that other women suffering from infertility like me might not be able to adopt a child due to finances I knew I had to help them. Every day I work beyond myself to help others achieve that title of MOM through adoption.
What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a mom?
For me the process of becoming a mom was so stressful (IVF and then adoption) that I truly believe I am more relaxed and focused as a mom than I was before. Also, in response to my own struggle, I am so much more aware of others around me and their struggles. It has become second nature to help others build their families through my work with Helpusadopt.org
Do you have a Beyond dream that you are pursing?
Helpusadopt.org is a dream come true and I know we have achieved success but I want more. I want to raise more money, help more people and build more families through our adoption grant program. The dream continues with each step forward.
What relationships and activities help you stay connected to yourself?
My kids are a daily reminder of why I do what I do and they constantly keep me laughing and grounded. For my time alone I spin at Soul Cycle—I need to keep moving—always.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra that you live by?
Sometimes life takes you in a direction that you would have never found for yourself.
What causes and topics are you most passionate about right now?
Adoption education. For generations society silenced the adoption community but I want nothing to do with that silence. Adoption is misunderstood by many and we work hard to reshape the way others view it.
How do you think we can change our culture from one in which a woman is expected to be a “perfect mother” to one in which she is encouraged to discover and explore her evolving self?
Talk about it and share our imperfections and weaknesses with others. I have a list—want to hear them? I spent years trying to be perfect. Now I just own it. I love marching to my own drum. I wear what I want to wear, I say what I want to say, I rock the boat and I let my kids have Doritos for breakfast if they want to—they’ll live. And the biggest thing in my book is to let your kids be imperfect—they are supposed to be —they’re kids. Some call me weird and others might call me worse—I’m ok with that.
Favorite go-to’s for:
Beyond Food (what do you cook & where do you go locally?)
Yes…this question goes hand in hand with being the perfect mom. I don’t cook. We order in. A lot.
Beyond Content (Books & Podcasts)
I am an avid reader—real books not kindle. Last year I read 74 books.
