GOING BEYOND INTERVIEW

Ashi Jelinek

Ashi is a Los Angeles-based mother of two who founded KidsLuv, the juice infused water that delivers essential vitamins and minerals for kids and parents. She realized the market lacked innovative, health conscious children’s products. Before becoming a stay-at-home parent, Ashi started her career in theatre in New York and attained her undergraduate degree in theater/communications at California Institute of the Arts. In launching KidsLuv, Ashi brings her personal experiences as a mother along with her passion for health and wellness. Focusing on promoting a healthy lifestyle for her kids, Ashi set out to create a new brand for both her own and other families alike.

What makes you a Beyond Mom?

I believe just being a mom in itself makes every mother a “Beyond” mom…and for me personally, it is the daily tasks of being a present mother, partner and a mother to my business.

What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a mom?

Empathy, understanding, and patience (which I am still not the best with). I would have never imagined before becoming a mother how much these three traits would need to grow and expand in me to make room for taking care of and supporting other little human beings.

Do you have a Beyond dream that you are pursuing?

I have just launched my business, KidsLuv (kidsluv.com). It is the first to market drink of its kind. A juice infused water with 12 essential vitamins and minerals, and zero harmful sugars. My hope is to provide children with a better, healthier way to get the essential vitamins in their diet and to stay hydrated without all the sugar.

What relationships and activities help you stay connected to yourself?

I love cycling, doing yoga and meditating even if it’s for 10 minutes during my day. Reconnecting with myself helps me bring a more centered person to both my family and my business. I also love hanging on the beach with my kids and watching them explore nature. For me, It’s important to disconnect with technology when I can and reconnect to what’s important.

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra that you live by?

These days with juggling family life and launching a new company it is “Breathe…take it day by day”

What causes and topics are you most passionate about right now?

I’m extremely passionate about a variety of children’s issues and causes from, child obesity to diabetes, autism and down syndrome as well as poverty. Some of these have directly impacted my family and I want to find a way to make a difference in these topics and areas.

How do you think we can change our culture from one in which a woman is expected to be a “perfect mother” to one in which she is encouraged to discover and explore her evolving self?

Wow, this is a hard one, there are a lot of double standards at play within our society. Women are expected and told that we should be able to handle and have it all. I don’t know if I believe that is true. I think the only way of changing our culture is starting with ourselves. First, we have to start having this conversation and also setting boundaries around these expectations and work from there. Our culture can only change if we start with the smaller changes with us as individuals and hope that can spread to something more meaningful and liberating…. And allow us as women to explore ourselves.

Favorite go-to’s for:

Beyond Food (what do you cook & where do you go locally?)

I love cooking, it is something I am hugely passionate about.

I love cooking all types of cuisines and really try to mix in a lot of ethnic cooking into my meals when I can along with keeping the meals healthy. Some of my go to’s are Turkey Burgers with mint and a yogurt sauce and Squash Lasagna. I go to the local farmer’s markets when I can for produce and local butchers for meat and fish. When I can I try to support Mom and Pop shops as small businesses make neighborhoods and communities.

Beyond Content (Books & Podcasts):

I love to listen to “How I built this” it is so interesting to hear the stories of how companies/brands are built. Currently, I am reading “Building a story Brand” by Donald Miller and love reading Vanity Fair and Time when I can.

Beyond Style:

My style go-to always involving layering necklaces, as I think accessories are what make an outfit. I am currently obsessed with Golden Goose sneakers as they are so fun and the most comfortable sneaker I have ever owned and a pair of linen black pants by Enzo costa. I think I have been wearing these 2 items for the last 2 weeks straight-lol! Also, a chic jumpsuit is always a go-to! As a working mom, anything that you can easily throw on, make look chic quickly is always a beyond style option for me! Oh and anything and everything that transitions from day to night easily.

Sometimes with the kids, I am already out and it’s hitting the witching hour so it’s nice to be able to go to dinner in an outfit I am already wearing.

Beyond Workout:

I like to switch it up or I get bored. My go to’s right now are cycling and vinyasa yoga. I like the balance of these two workouts in both my mental and physical state:)
