GOING BEYOND INTERVIEW

Morgan Hutchinson

Morgan Hutchinson created ShopBURU.com when she became frustrated with the lack of stylish nursing wear. Now, her website is the first and only online destination that stocks high fashion designer wears hand-selected for breastfeeding mothers. Morgan knew that becoming a mother shouldn’t mean losing your personal sense of style. She brings her talents as a former stylist to the site with seasonal look books, playtime and office appropriate attire, and a peak into her own wardrobe as a new mother. Find out how Morgan goes Beyond in the different roles she plays and why she believes laughter is essential for surviving motherhood.

1. What makes you a Beyond Mom?

As an entrepreneur and founder of BURU – I am a Beyond Mom because I am constantly working “beyond” regular business hours. When you love your child and husband as I do, while still having a passion for your career, then you must go beyond the norm and work while others sleep.  It’s often exhausting, sometimes frustrating, but mostly rewarding.  The flexibility to be there when my child and mate need me is priceless.  If that means burning a little midnight oil – then so be it.

 2. What are the parts of you that have grown and expanded since becoming a Mom?

My heart and my ability to laugh at myself.  Not sure how you survive motherhood without a lot of laughing.

3. Can you share a collaboration/success story with another woman; what helped the collaboration become successful?

Absolutely. Too many to mention really.  I find that the mom space is incredibly supportive and motivating. Specifically speaking, I loved our collaboration with designer Corey Lynn Calter. We created an exclusive mommy & me collection featured by numerous press outlets and influencers including Glamour, Mother Mag and Taylor Sterling, the founder of Glitter Guide.

4. What relationships help you stay connected to yourself?

My amazing husband, my super fun mom, and my two best friends (since we were 3) who happen to be identical twins. Each of them know me inside and out and make me feel loved no matter what.

5. Do you have a ‘Beyond’ dream that you are pursuing? If so, please share…

Well to be honest – BURU. We are a work in progress. A small business in a big business space. I have big plans for BURU. I would love for us to become the go-to destination for elevated #momstyle. It is no easy feat.  The website turns 2 (24-months in mom speak) on September 24th.  I wake up everyday with a goal to move us in a forward direction. Sometimes that is 1 back for every 2 forward, but when you have a dream – you must go for it. Go big or go home, right?

 6. What wellness activity can you not live without? What is one thing you do daily that balances you?

I am a big fan of long walks. Brett, Olive and I take a brisk stroll after work every chance we get.

7. How does style influence the way you stay feeling ‘Beyond’? Who is currently your favorite designer?

Style is my biggest form of self-expression. I honestly feel my best when I experiment and think outside the box with my outfit.  Feeling a unique sense of self certainly keeps me feeling ‘Beyond’!  As far as my favorite designers right now…I don’t think I could only name one.  I am loving Rachel Comey, Ryan Roche, and Ace & Jig (all Beyond Moms btw).

Favorite NYC Spots that Embody The Beyond Mom:

I am a hotel bar kind of girl.  I love a classic Manhattan spot. Brett and I met at Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlyle so it holds a special place in my heart. I also love the Nomad Hotel Bar for fun cocktails and dinner at Cafe Clover.

 Beyond Cocktails and/or Food:

I love a Vodka Gimlet served up.  Okay – I actually just love Vodka and freshly squeezed lime juice – skip the simple syrup. And absolutely NO Roses “lime” juice.

 Beyond Workout:

Hot Yoga (and carrying my 2.5 year old around all the time!).  She’s a stinker like that!

Beyond Shopping:

For me: BURU of course. (wink)  For shoes:  Net-a-porter to splurge and Off 5th when I need to be thrifty!  For Olive: The Proper Peony, The Beaufort Bonnet Company, and Oeuf.  Oh…and the Love Shack Fancy x Romy & the Bunnies collection is to die for!

Beyond Inspiration:

Every mama following her dream!  I am always super impressed with Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked.  She is inspiring, supportive and so kind. She also works her tail off and adores her family. Great qualities.
