Work, Wealth, and Diversification

Yesterday’s drop in the market reminded me that after I bought more stock, I needed to think about diversification.

Not in my portfolio – my portfolio consists of three stocks and less than $500 total. But having money in my savings account and in stocks…that’s diversified!

But there’s this whole work thing. It’s a feast or famine kind of gig, and it scares me. Not the feast part, but the famine part. I cannot be making 2/3 of my income from one source. At least, I shouldn’t. Not if I want to be safe in the long run.

At first I thought I should diversify my writing and the places I write for.

But last week I went to a PartyLite party and last night I went to a network marketing meeting for the team of the woman that did my friend’s party.

I know what you’re thinking…oh LAWRD network marketing! Oh NO home parties!

I know, I feel the same way.

But, there’s this little thing where I can sell. I mean, I can SELL. I could sell you something if you didn’t have a dollar, trust me. It’s my secret spidey-power. I can cold call like a mofo and bond with people in thirty seconds or less.

Before you tell me that whole, “You have to sell your passion” crap, let me tell you something (yeah, I’m getting all violent now…watchagonnadoaboutit?) Name me ONE insurance salesman that went into the job to help people and because insurance was their passion?

Yeah.

Anything can become your passion if you get enough positive reinforcement and money for it. It’s like a happy arranged marriage…it can totally happen over time under the right circumstances.

Plus it would be a nice change to have someone ask me how much it costs and just be able to say, “That pillar candle is $9.95.” No hourly rate, no sliding scale, no bargainers kicking my tires and talking me down.

If we were a two car family and I had babysitters to spare, I’d probably do it. But we have the one car and I couldn’t do any shows until after 6:30pm – so I don’t know.

Either way the jury is out on if I’m going to do this or not based on my show on Tuesday.

If you received your invitation via e-mail and have not yet responded, email or call me and let me know you’re coming by. The party is only going to last two hours, so you should come and relax for a few. It’s going to be a good time.
