"The USDE does not do auto debit"
Totally NOT TRUE! In fact, if you do autodebit with them, they give you a percent point off your loan interest! Woo-hoo! In fact, I am doing auto-debit with them RIGHT NOW!

Hi

Just found your website -- great information. It is good to learn about these things before you go down the wrong path with defaulted loans.

I had a small loan I defaulted on it got sent to collections they would not budge -- not one iota, they said if I paid it off in full they would cut they interest down--- I borrowed money so I could paid it off and they took a small amount of interest off now it is on my credit report as a not paid in full collected debt for seven years, ( and paid off the other loan)
Now at least I was able to get back in school and now am finishing up my Master's ---

You can only rehab once, so if you're going to talk to them make sure you're ready for a long-term commitment!

This is great information! I defaulted on one student loan about 10 years ago. They were going to garnish my wages. I did the nine month thing and wound up paying it off in full before the due date. The loan was small, maybe $1,500.

Now my husband and I both have huge loans coming due. We have deferred twice. We have one more deferment left because they only let you do it three times and then the crying begins. I don't look forward to it because the way things stand now, we can't pay them. I have a year to figure it out though. Time will tell.

It is just nice to know that we are not alone in the black hole :)
