Admitting You Have a Problem (stupid girl political edition)
I wanted Hillary Clinton to be the Vice Presidential candidate.
There, I said it.
Originally I said it only to my husband in a small, pathetic whisper. Like someone might hear me and point and laugh and say something very smart about how only a moron would want that. Because I’m very stupid when it comes to politics. There are too many people with too many opinions and both sides have enough truth that finding the real truth is damn near impossible, because in politics it’s all deals and opinions and talking and shifting and I’m starting to think there is no real truth under everyone’s blustering and righteous indignation.
Back to my ignorant opinions on politics…
Earlier I was watching Fox Business Network and Hannity was saying Hillary was the only choice that would have signaled “Change” and the democrats and republicans at the table, you know, agreed. Democrats agreeing with Hannity….Armageddon anyone?
I felt a lot less stupid about politics for the first time in my life. People in expensive suits had the same thought I did. If you’re going to preach change, why pick yet another old white man who’s been inside Washington for a billion years. So now I’m not whispering it. I’m saying it loud and embarrassed as all hell proud! (Baby steps, people)
Sure, I get it, Biden has experience, foreign policy, is Catholic. Yeah, that Catholic thing works out great for people in office. Oh wait. There was only that one…you know…Kennedy. Yet Catholics have been voting all this time – you think maybe we can vote with something other than our religious affiliation? Yes, we can, because we have a lot of practice. But it was mentioned ten times during the speeches. Catholic. Oh, did you know Biden is Catholic? So, yeah, if you’re all with the anti-abortion agenda, we’re not going to talk about it, but we will point to Biden, say "He’s Catholic!" really loud and let you assume he’s on the picket line with the rest of the crazies that will convince you to give your baby up for adoption, but not to them, because they’re too busy picketing.
I wanted it to be Hillary.
Even reading it now I’m thinking it looks scary and a little sad. My husband says Ms. Clinton majored in revisionist history in college, but you know, The young pup from Illinois and the hard-ass broad from…oh yeah…Illinois…would have made this chica from the Land of Lincoln very happy. They would have been like the odd couple of politics. Totally different, but with a common thread.
Especially because Obama has been part of the Chicago machine forever. First as a state representative under the wing of Emil Jones II and then before he was a senator he repped Tony Rezko as a lawyer. He may be all about change, but he grew up in the heart of the most amazing political climate in the US – Chicago. Where dead people vote. Regularly.
Maybe I’m slanted because I grew up and still live so close to Chicago. Maybe I’m just tired of everyone within a 100 mile radius acting like Obama is the new Jesus. (Although it’s an improvement over being the city that’s ruled by Queen Oprah.)
Or maybe it’s just that the first time Obama was called forth to show us what he meant by change - he picked the VP candidate that most represented the status quo.
I just wanted it to be Hillary.
I was going to vote Obama, but this Joe Biden thing just messes that up for me. I don’t want to vote for McCain, and if he picks the uber-creepy Mitt Romney (doesn’t he look like the Mormon guy…really…I mix them up) I will still vote for Obama. But…if McCain picks a woman VP candidate (a long shot, I know) then I have to say I will be torn. Hell, I’m torn anyway. Really, I just don’t know who to vote for. I’ve seen the tax comparisons over at Yielding Wealth that show I’d get a wee little tax decrease from Obama, but that will add up to a few bucks for me. Not enough to base a whole presidency on. There’s the Iraq thing but man, I don’t know enough about that to make a decision based on that. The housing crisis? Not my problem. (Well we did have a personal house crisis, but I didn’t look to the government to save my ass.) Change for the ordinary people? I’m not ordinary, and hope you aren’t either. Why does everyone keep referring to me as ordinary. As in, "Ordinary Americans." I don’t think there is any such thing. It’s kind of the principal this country was built on. We are the survivors. The descendants of people who left where they were for a better life. That is not ordinary.
The other thing I worry about is the fact that the rest of the world hates America kind of a lot right now. We are like the school bully and everyone is to the point where they’re not just taunting us behind our backs. Maybe a papa bear McCain could set things right and show we are a strong nation. Obama? I’m scared he’ll be all sweetness and light with no backbone (I mean, giving the Clintons two days at the DNC before he shows? That’s not backbone) and take us from being the big bully to the school nerd just waiting for a wedgie.
I’m really torn. I wanted this to be an easy decision. I wanted to be able to see an Obama/Hillary ticket and get excited for the real change that was coming. A black man and a woman in the white house. I really think it would have happened.
Now? I don’t think my vote matters. McCain is going to win.
Maybe something fantastic will happen at the DNC to make me change my mind. I have a feeling the crowd will be much more festive at the RNC (and not just because their name doesn’t make me think of something other than a medical D&C, ew.)
I really wanted it to be Hillary. I wanted real change.

Got something to say?

I could have written this post. I should have written this post. I can’t even comment because you have said everything I said to my husband yesterday. I wanted it to be Hillary. Obama sealed his fate and the nations fate by picking Biden. I will now vote Green Party. I worry for our country and my family. To top it off, we have to put up with the circus that is the Democratic Convention for a whole week in our city.
I didn’t want to wake up to reality today, thanks Jen (lol).

Good post. I don’t necessarily agree with all of it but you brought out a couple of points that I hadn’t thought of yet. But, hey, I live in Florida so my vote doesn’t count anyway! (only halfway teasing there)
I have no idea who to vote for. Seriously. It will be interesting to see who McCain chooses and how things shake out as it gets closer.
Jennis last blog post..QOTD! Alooooooha!
I was hoping for Hillary, but she comes with a lot of baggage, a LOT of baggage. So, I knew it was a long shot. I actually agree with nearly everything she does (think about liberal now go far left of that and you’ll understand where I sit). I still had a sliver of hope, but I knew. Just knew. It wasn’t going to happen. I will not. EVER. Vote for McCain. Just for what he did to his wife (far worse than what Bill did to Hillary IMHO) - talk about lack of morals and human decency. No way.
Having said all that. I like Biden. He’s a little more conservative than I like my liberals, but he’ll bring balance. I like that he doesn’t agree with Obama on everything, and I think that’s ultimately why Obama chose him. I also find it interesting that Biden was not an Obama supporter in the beginning - to me that means he brings something interesting to politics, which can be boring.

@Candy Thanks for the link!
@Everyone - wow. I was so scared there would be flaming for this one. But you are all AWESOME.
@Willow - The only other person I know that liberal is my great-grandmother (who raised me) are you, like, socialist? I’m going over to check your blog out now, hopefully you write about politics now and then because I’d like to hear that ultra-liberal perspective from someone under 90
Ultimately I’m a flip-flopper. I’m one of the Americans that doesn’t self label Democrat or Republican. There are a lot of us out there. Most people probably assume I’m a Democrat because I’m a mom blogger and hang out online and a vast majority of the online bloggers I’ve found are liberal/Democrat and I can see where they are coming from.
I also have a friend who blogs and is very conservative/Republican. She has a McCain sign in her yard (I’m too much of a coward for signs my friends) and people stopped talking to her over it. I can’t imagine.
So thanks again for posting, and if I go political in the future please if you think I’m wrong, I promise, it’s worth taking the extra time to tell me why you think so. I’ll listen.
I’m a middle-aged white male and I’m going to vote for the Green Party ticket of Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente. I’m thrilled they are women of color but that’s a bonus reason to vote for them. My chief reasons are practical: McKinney is pro-worker, pro-family’ anti-war, dedicated to fostering real social and economic justice to name a few of her platform declarations. Ideals the old New Deal Democrats used to advocate!
Obama’s choice of the the lifelong D.C. insider-safe-for-big-business-Biden chapped me enough to give up the lunacy of hope that Obama’s going to miraculously reverse himself and morph into be a progressive candidate after being elected.
Thanks Biden, for steering me to the candidate who is dedicated to the ideals America professes to cherish and stand for.
Hi Ray - You know what? That’s a really well put comment. Seriously.
I think I, like many people, forgot about the Green Party for a minute. Oh wait, I didn’t forget…I thought Nader was running again and man, I am done with Nader. That guy needs to stop running for President already.
A dual-female team? Under the green party? That’s bold. I’m still of the mind you need a penis somewhere on the ticket to get into the White House. But if nothing else, even if the Green Party doesn’t get elected, I could see placing my vote there so they get more funding next go-round.
An independent vote is NOT a wasted vote - even if they don’t win they get more funding and that’s another baby step to the White House.
Thank you for your comment Roy, it gave me a lot to think about. I’m going to research the Green Party duo now.
I’m going to chime right on in- I could have written this!
Although, I think I’m going to be voting for someone I know isn’t going to win but I just can’t stomach giving my vote to either of the front runners. How about a independent candidate?!
Now that would be a change wouldn’t it!
I’m still hoping Hillary changes her mind and agrees to be a write in. I wanted Hillary as well. Obama just doesn’t have what it takes. He’s like the little new kid in school searching for approval from anyone.
But Obama’s VP choice just did him in- He’s lost my vote as well as thousands if not millions more!
Thanks? for the mention
Anyway, both my husband and I were disappointed not to have Hillary on the ticket. I also would have liked to maybe have seen someone other than Biden. I know WHY the Obama campaign went with him, but I don’t really have to like it. But now it’s either Obama or a 3rd Bush term. *sigh* Although if the McCain that ran in 2000 was the McCain that is running now, I might have had a tougher time making the decisions….
Me, too - but I was also really worried that her husband was too much baggage and maybe so much that it would cost the election. The Biden thing hasn’t sunk in yet but they will still get my vote even if McCain does choose a woman (which I don’t think he will now that Obama hasn’t).
